Baby Blessing

Today Matthew blessed our little Henry Thomas. We were very glad to celebrate this special day with friends and our ward family. He was blessed to be loving, charitable, and tolerant of others. He was blessed to have a desire for learning and discovery. He was blessed to care for his body through healthy eating and exercise. He was blessed to find joy in his family. He was blessed to live his life following the teachings of Jesus Christ. We love Henry so much! There is so much potential for a good and happy life inside this little boy, and we are excited to be along for the journey to see that potential realized.

Another Crazy Weekend

Not to brag or anything, but we have quite a bit of fun on the weekends. We like to cram our free days with as much fun and craziness as possible. This weekend was a three day weekend, so there was definitely a lot of craziness going on around here.

We started our weekend with a spur of the moment trip to the coast. We grabbed some towels, jumped in the car, and drove three hours to Mustang Island.

Henry stuck his toes in the ocean for the first time,

an experience he didn't exactly relish.

Howie ran in the waves and ran away from the waves.

We built a sand castle.

Then we drove home, stopping for hamburgers and milkshakes on the way.

But this was just Friday. We still had lots of weekend left to enjoy. On Saturday morning we rode our bikes to the Fiesta Pooch Parade. (Dogs of all kinds parading down the street in costumes.)

Howie watching the parade with his neighborhood friends Laura and Charlie.

Henry fell asleep on the ride to the parade and napped through the whole thing.
After the parade we rode home and made some pancakes for (second) breakfast. Then we went to the botanical gardens.

Our trip to the botanical gardens was cut short when Howie slipped on some rocks and got two HUGE cuts on his foot and leg. Luckily he didn't need stitches, but he gave me quite a scare. We enjoyed the rest of the afternoon watching Loony Toons and eating ice cream. Add in a trip to the bike shop and a nice dinner and you have a weekend worth remembering.

Bike Crazy

We are obsessed with bikes. Of course, you already knew that. So you shouldn't be too surprised when I tell you that I bought a new bike. What is that you say? Didn't you just buy a new road bike? Just two months ago? Well yes, that is true. I had a good reason for getting that road bike. And I had a good reason for buying a completely different bike this weekend. In the end it all comes from having a new baby in the house. And a love of buying new bikes. But mostly having a new baby in the house.

A new baby changes everything. After Henry was born I was convinced that biking for transportation was no longer practical or even possible. He was so small and delicate. He ate ALL the time. Traveling anywhere with him required careful planning, numerous supplies, and frequent breaks for breast feeding. If I could barely manage trips in the car with an infant, how would I ever survive a trip on my bike?

It seemed like the only answer was to give up utilitarian cycling. Obviously, having an infant and a toddler meant that I would spend my days locked in the house wearing a bathrobe surrounded by dirty dishes and laundry. If I did get out of the house, it would be for story time at the library, and I would have to drive there. So I sold my bike--a beautiful green bike with a rear rack, fenders, and heavy duty tires that could haul home two kids and a weeks worth of groceries, even if it was uphill in a rainstorm. I replaced it with a road bike I found on Craigslist. It was a pure speed machine with a shiny frame and skinny tires. This was a bike for sunny days and spandex shorts. I was going to ride it inside on a trainer at night after the kids were asleep and take it out for longer rides on Saturday mornings. It was the perfect solution for feasibly satisfying my bike cravings.

The only problem is that it didn't satisfy my bike cravings. Riding a bike inside is boring. Night time for a tired mama is better spent laying on the couch eating ice cream instead of donning spandex shorts and doing intervals. I rode when I could, which wasn't very often. In the meantime, things seemed to be getting easier. I had time to get dressed in the morning. I wasn't breast feeding as often. Trips in the car didn't seem to be as crazy. Maybe, just maybe, I could use my bike for transportation with two kids.

But not with my road bike, of course. It can't pull a trailer. I needed a new bike. A bike that can do anything: go fast on a group ride, take me where I need to go, carry a rack, and pull a trailer. So last Saturday I bought a Surly Cross Check. Now I have a bike that can pull the trailer, bring home groceries, and take me to story time at the library. Even better, it is a bike that reminds me that even though I have two kids, I don't have to give up everything that I love. Being a utilitarian cyclists is an integral part of who I am. I can't give it up, and I don't have to.

I love having my new bike. I rode it to the park twice. I road to the grocery store. I rode to Home Depot. And I did it all pulling a trailer with a little baby and a toddler inside. It makes me happy. Life is better with a bike, even if you have to buy two (or three) to find the perfect one.

What a great bike. I did have several twinges of regret after I sold you.

You are so speedy. But wait, you can't pull a trailer. How am I ever supposed to ride you if you can't pull a trailer?

My new bike! Isn't it awesome? I will keep this bike forever! (For some reason Mom doesn't believe me. She said she would give me a gallon of ice cream if I keep it for five years.)

I am taking my new bike out for the first time. Look! I can pull a trailer! Also, note my awesome new super protective polka dotted helmet.

Happy Easter!

We enjoyed a very nice Easter weekend together as a family. On Saturday we took Howie and Henry to an egg hunt at the park next to our library. Howie was at the top of his age group this year, so he had no problem running around like crazy picking up eggs. Not that it mattered too much. There were actually so many eggs that all the kids filled up their buckets and got bored. It took a little encouragement from the parents to get the grass completely cleared.

On Sunday morning there were surprises waiting for Howie and Henry. Needless to say, Howie was very excited.

There were Matchbox cars. "The Eese bunny got me race cars!"

There were bubbles. "The Eese bunny got me bubbles so Daddy could blow bubbles me outside!"

There was a chocolate bunny and eggs filled with jelly beans (which Howie was nice enough to share--and not just the black ones. He gave me two purples and a red one.)

And there was a little snugglie giraffe blanket for Henry. He loves it! (Isn't he just too cute!)

After a wonderful musical Easter program at church, we dyed eggs. Howie put all the eggs in every single color at least four times each, so most of our eggs are a lovely dark purple color. Later, Howie helped me smash the eggs so we could peel them and eat them for dinner. We enjoyed some egg salad sandwiches, strawberry avocado salad, and carrot cake cupcakes. Yum!

It was a very nice weekend spent celebrating with family and remembering the resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. We hope it was the same for you.

Henry--11 Weeks

Our little Henry has been growing. He is now 12 pounds--the cute little chunk!

He loves to sleep! (Thank Heavens!)

He loves to take baths, and he loves to smile!

If he is laying by himself for a few minutes, he likes to have something to snuggle with.
(In this case one of Daddy's shirts.)

Howie loves to play with Henry.

Henry hasn't said if he always likes to play with Howie.

But one thing is certain--we all love this little guy!
