Garbage Truck Races

Today we went to the solid waste department's garbage truck races. Every year the city's garbage truck drivers compete against each other driving their garbage trucks through a timed obstacle course. The winners go on to compete in a state competition. It is quite a lot of fun to watch.

Why were we there when Matt no longer works for the solid waste department? A good question, indeed. There are several reasons. Firstly, solid waste has the most fun of any department in the city. We have been crashing their parties for over a year and a half. Secondly, if you have ever been part of solid waste you are forever considered a member of the solid waste family. We haven't been crashing parties. We have been on the guest list. And last of all, we have a little boy who loves cars and trucks and anything with wheels. He would spend all day, every day watching garbage trucks drive around if he could.

Howie is a regular at the garbage truck races. He attended his first race when he was only four months old, and he has been to one almost every year since then.

May 2009 Garbage Truck Races. Howie is four months old.  Is it any wonder that he loves cars and trucks?

March 2010 Garbage Truck Races. Howie is 14 months old.

This year Henry went to his first garbage truck race at four months old, the same age Howie was when he went for the first time. I guess you can say we are all full of garbage over here.

After watching the garbage trucks we went to the solid waste department family fun day. We had lots of fun playing volleyball, eating bbq, and playing games. We send many thanks to our solid waste department family for a great Saturday.

Matt and Howie playing the water balloon toss. Of the two, I think Matt got the wettest.

Henry spent most of the day chillin' and being admired.

Howie got to sit in a fire truck. Matt said, "Do you want to get out." Howie said, "No."

Dance Party!

We love to dance. We also love to party. So this Wednesday we spiced up our night with a Dance Party, complete with balloons, cookies, and punch. We cranked up the music (mostly Michael Jackson) and rocked out like we were at a Tri-Stake Dance. The whole family had a great time! Howie can boogie with the best of them, and Henry laughed and laughed. (Unfortunately you can't see this in the video. The Henry laugh is as elusive as Bigfoot and has yet to be captured on film.) And Matt is so much fun to dance with! Seriously, I married him for his dance moves. We all danced and danced until we could dance no more. Then we went to bed, tired and happy.

Happy Birthday Matthew!

Saturday we celebrated Matthew's birthday! Since he is still young,  I can tell you that we celebrated his 30th birthday, but after this you are on your own. If you want to know how old Matt in the future, start keeping track now.

Our birthday celebrations started with a bike ride to the Farmer's Market where we bought peaches and pastries.

Then we rode our bikes to the Botanical Gardens to enjoy a Japanese Festival. We watched a karate demonstration, walked through the tea gardens, and colored an origami hat.

After wandering through the gardens we stopped at our favorite sandwich shop for lunch and went birthday shopping. Matt decided that he would like me to give him a new bike helmet for his birthday so we stopped by our local bike shop. We got a new helmet for Howie, too.

A helmet is a gift that says you want to live to see another birthday. If the helmet has a large, green, glow in the dark brain on it, it is also a gift that says you are stylish.

We wrapped up the day with cupcakes--lots of cupcakes! Happy birthday, Matt! I sure do love you!

Howie the Photographer

Howie has discovered my camera. His new favorite thing to do is pull my camera out of the drawer and take pictures of--well, everything. He is now a budding photographer with quite a large body of work. Based on his portfolio, it would appear that he prefers abstract photography. Here are some of his latest shots:

"I take picture me cars."
(This seems to be Howie's favorite subject matter.)

"I take picture books."

"I take picture Daddy's pants."

"I take picture Mama's pants."

"I take picture Henry."

This one is actually pretty good, right?

Who is photographer? Who is the subject? Only great art can answer these questions.

Every great photographer occasionally gets his finger in the shot.
